Let’s Call it “Filipino Kitschstep” (a.k.a Budots)

Naming the street music that literally keeps me up at night — for good reasons.

I want to share an idea on what to call the genre. I’m making it public for everybody’s reference.

It makes it easier to communicate to an international audience.

“Etymological Documentation”

It’s a combination of “kitsch” and “dubstep”.

“Kitsch” is a word I first read when I was researching for an identity style guide pitch. It’s defined as: “art, objects, or design considered to be in poor taste because of excessive garishness or sentimentality, but sometimes appreciated in an ironic or knowing way.”

“Filipino Kitschstep” as a winning political campaign jingle.

Which I think appropriately encapsulates the current cultural perception on the style; albeit as pejorative and dismissive as it might seem like as a The Guardian article points out.

“Dubstep” is — as you may already know — dubstep.

For your consideration.

Or it already has a name and I simply don’t know what it is yet.

And, oh, we have a few on it on Spotify already.

For the record, I like it.

Art is beyond taste. Leave your prejudices behind when you want to be uplifted.
