List Of 5: April 2024 Edition

Alesana, Skusta Clee, et, al. in one list. Because they all slap!

It’s been a while since I’ve penned a List of 5 article. It used to be a staple, a recurring segment in the early days of this blog. Essentially, it’s a quick rundown where I list five things about whatever I’m currently into; whether it’s music, food, movies – anything I typically discuss on this blog. It’s part recommendation, part sharing, and part journaling, reaching out to whoever reads it.

I’m reviving this tradition now because why not? There’s so much I want to share, and it feels like the perfect time to do it. Today, I want to share, true to form, the music that’s currently resonating with me. It’s somewhat unconventional considering the prevalence of streaming and scrobbling, with people tending to share smaller bits of information. I believe this art of crafting rankings and discussing each item in a meaningful way is somewhat fading. So, this comeback serves as a tribute to that.

Here’s my list, in no particular order or format (albums or singles both make the cut), starting with a piece I believe should still be making waves:

1. Alesana – The Emptiness

“The Emptiness” by Alesana still resonates with the same epic intensity as when it first debuted. Alesana, for those who remember, was a screamo powerhouse in its heyday. While the market has shifted its interests, there are still enthusiasts like myself who continue to appreciate this genre just as fervently as the first time we heard it. This isn’t about nostalgia; it’s about sticking to personal preferences and resisting societal pressures to constantly “evolve.”

It’s perfectly fine to continue enjoying old favorites. It’s okay to stick to the music you’ve always loved. While exploration is enriching, not everyone feels the need to switch things up, especially when it comes to artistic preferences. This List of 5 might seem “dated” in its references, but who really cares? If anything, it’s a testament to the timelessness of the art and music I’m discussing here, proving it’s not as disposable as some perceive it to be.

“The Emptiness” is a concept album brimming with drama and intensity. Each song seamlessly connects with the next, creating a compelling narrative best experienced in its entirety. While individual tracks stand strong on their own, they gain even more depth within the album’s context. It’s a 45-minute journey of pure emotion, tragedy, horror, and heartache—a sonic and lyrical rollercoaster that grips you from start to finish.

On a related note, check out Tempting Paris, a side project featuring members of Alesana. While they might not be active now, their full-length album is worth a listen. It deviates slightly from the Alesana sound, leaning into a piano-heavy, vaudeville-inspired masterpiece that’s both wholesome and captivating.

2. Skusta Clee – Noche Buena

Skusta Clee makes an unexpected appearance on this list, perhaps surprising those who assume vocal rock enthusiasts like myself wouldn’t appreciate other genres. It’s 2024, and such presumptions are outdated. While heavy music remains my home, good music transcends genres, and “Noche Buena” exemplifies that.

The song’s “I-iii-II-V” progression struck a chord with me (pun intended) from the first listen. Its melancholic, sentimental vibe, coupled with stellar arrangement, makes it a standout piece. The Philippines boasts a plethora of hip-hop and R&B artists with exceptional producers and arrangers, and “Noche Buena” is a testament to that.

Skusta Clee’s music, in general, captivates me, but this track, in particular, stands out with its heartfelt yet non-whiny sentimentality. While much sentimental music tends to lean toward ambient minimalism, “Noche Buena” maintains a certain bounce and brightness that I appreciate, reminiscent of artists like Now, Now.

3. DĖMI – homebdy

Thanks to a chance encounter on an e-jeep and the wonders of Shazam, I stumbled upon DĖMI’s “homebdy.” It’s been on repeat in my playlist for months now, primarily due to its unique vocal style and lyricism. DĖMI’s slurred, understated pronunciations add layers of character and depth to the arrangement, a refreshing departure from my usual musical bubble.

The song’s vocal cadence is equally mesmerizing. Compared to early 2000s R&B, DĖMI’s execution feels more elegant and dynamic, resonating with me in ways I hadn’t anticipated. Her music, including tracks like “Pakundangan,” possesses a captivating quality that keeps me engaged—a rare feat in today’s R&B landscape.

4. DENȲ – Sabik

Credit where it’s due: algorithms and a UP Fair bill introduced me to DENȲ and their song “Sabik.” Like “Noche Buena,” its “vii-VI” progression immediately drew me in. There’s a fine line between staleness and elegance in R&B arrangements, and “Sabik” effortlessly leans toward the latter. Its ambient, atmospheric production evokes a visceral, bittersweet resonance that I thrive on as a metalcore and screamo enthusiast.

Lyrically profound yet simple, “Sabik” strikes a delicate balance between catchiness and emotional depth. The bass execution is particularly noteworthy, adding a deep, growly richness to the overall sound. I’m eager to explore more songs that capture this same transcendent quality.

5. Doja Cat – Paint The Town Red

Last but not least, we have Doja Cat and her infectious track, “Paint The Town Red.” By now, her presence on TikTok has likely reached everyone’s radar. Yet, there’s something undeniably fresh about her delivery, from her unique vocal stylings to her captivating flow.

The song’s groovy, bouncy vibe and infectious hook make it an instant favorite. Despite its two-chord structure, “Paint The Town Red” doesn’t feel repetitive, thanks to its dynamic composition and genre-pushing approach.

In conclusion, these selections aren’t intentionally skewed toward R&B/hip-hop; they’re simply what’s been resonating with me lately. I’m not bound by any scene or group; I’m just sharing what’s been “rocking my socks” in recent months. And while I have a backlog of heavy modern metal music waiting to be explored, perhaps that’s a topic for the next List of 5.
